The father and son team of Ric and Jeff Grant began crafting boro beads in 2001 in their mountain studio overlooking Kootenay Lake, in Nelson, British Columbia. In 2005, Jeff moved to Cape Cod, in Massachusetts.
The Grants use a modern approach to lampworking—the ancient technique of working glass in a flame. A torch combines propane and pure oxygen to produce a flame hot enough to melt the glass. The molten glass is then wrapped around a steel rod, and the bead is formed. The beads are then annealed in a kiln to relieve the stresses in the glass and to bring out the colours, thus producing the beauty and uniqueness of each bead.
